150 years after the first ascent
A reportage in all-round images for the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, for swissinfo.ch.
Four of the seven first ascensionists died on the descent in 1865. The images were made in 2015 with mountain guides and climbers who know the mountain closely.
They lead into the museum to the remains of the rope that broke in 1865, to breakfast outside the Hörnli hut, where the hut warden and mountain guide Kurt Lauber, with 400 Matterhorn ascents, looks after the climbers, and up to the snow-covered summit ridge.
swissinfo.ch took the reportage out into the world in eight languages, among them Chinese and Russian. The start of the collaboration with swissinfo.ch.
