An immersive document of its time
History as a space to experience. A tribute to the film pioneer Ernst A. Heiniger.
“Echorama” is based on “Rund um Rad und Schiene”, which the two-time Oscar winner shot in 1964 for the SBB pavilion at the Expo. Memoriav and SBB Historic had restored the film in 2014.
Heiniger’s footage shows Bern’s old town, the dining car and a building site, with news of the day running alongside. The new footage was shot among other places at Zurich main station by night, in brack.ch’s robotic warehouse, at Ballenberg and at the Street Parade. The highlight is the silence of the mountains: new aerial shots of the region around the Matterhorn.
So the Switzerland of Expo 64 and today’s stand side by side. “Echorama” was published in February 2019 online by SRF Kultur and on YouTube, alongside the documentary “Der Boss, Walt Disney und die vergessenen Oscars”. Part of the collaboration with SRF.
