One story, several truths
One story, several truths: the rope break on the Matterhorn in 1865, retold for the 150th anniversary.
Since 1865, Edward Whymper’s view had shaped the reading of the accident in which four of the seven first ascensionists died. The special exhibition at the Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt set against it the voices of the guides Peter Taugwalder father and son.
From archives as far as London the original documents came together, in one place for the first time, among them the letter of 1917 in which the son recalls the rope break. In the video, Reinhold Messner and Whymper’s granddaughter Nigella Hall speak.
Matthias Taugwalder developed the concept, led the production and photographed the documents. On show from July 2015 to spring 2016.
