Cow fighting is a traditional Swiss event. Unlike bullfighting, in which humans fight bulls, cow fighting pits cow against cow. Each year, the Swiss canton of Valais hosts a series of cow fights known as combats de reines ("queen fights"). With their horns blunted, the fights are mainly a pushing contest. The «Carnival of Basel» (called in German: Basler Fasnacht) starts the Monday after Ash Wednesday at precisely 4:00 am with the so-called Morgestraich. The carnival lasts for exactly 72 hours and, therefore, ends on Thursday morning at 4:00 am.

During this time the Fasnächtler (the participants) dominate the old town of central Basel, running free in the streets and restaurants. Basler Fasnacht is often referred to as die drey scheenschte Dääg ("the three most beautiful days"). Read more »

Swiss television SF1 organized the live tv event «Aida at the Rhine». This is the third in the series of projects, following «La Traviata» at Zurich Main Station in 2008 and «La Bohème» in the Suburbs of Bern in 2009. Aida at the Rhine was live broadcast from Basle on October 1st 2010. More than 338'000 viewers watched the opera. Read more »

The Matterhorn (4478m/14692ft) near Zermatt/Switzerland is well-known for its unique and beautiful form, its importance in the history of alpinism and the dramatic story of its first ascent. A typical ascent of the Matterhorn over the Hörnli ridge starts at 4:30am at night after a very short breakfast. That day there were about 80 climbers to climb the Hörnli ridge. The trails of their headlamps can be seen in the image. The ascent to the summit takes about 4-5 hours, and about 3-4 hours for the descent. Read more »
